Translation and Legalization of Documents involves certifying the authenticity of a document by the issuing country through the affixing of an Apostille at the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Education and Science, on the certified documents issued in the Republic of Bulgaria. This is done so that these documents will be recognized by the institutions of another country.

An apostille may take the form of a stamp on the document or an integral attached certificate—regardless of the form, it always contains the required information and has the same legal force.

Legalization of Bulgarian Documents

Most Commonly Legalized Documents:
Higher education diploma—consists of two documents: the diploma and the transcript. Legalization is performed on the original or on a notarized copy of the diploma. Please make sure the diploma is signed by the graduate—this is often overlooked and results in the legalization being denied!
High School Diploma – A high school diploma is legalized in the same way as a college diploma; the difference is that there is no appendix, and only one legalization document is required.
Student Certificate—the original document must be certified on this form—must specify the degree being pursued—Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Specialist—and the country for which it is intended.
Birth certificate – a duplicate, not the original, must be legalized; the municipality has affixed a rectangular stamp on the back certifying the signatures and seals on the document. In other words, when you request a duplicate from the municipality, specify that you need it for legalization, and they will affix this rectangular stamp on the back. Certificate of Marital Status/ Marriage Certificate – legalization follows the same requirements as the Birth Certificate; again, please note that the stamp on the back is mandatory; its absence will result in the refusal of legalization!
Certificate of Criminal Record – the original (valid for 6 months) must be legalized and must bear the signatures of a court clerk and a judge. Please note that when the certificate is issued, you must specify that you need it for use abroad so that it can also be signed by a judge! If the second signature is missing, the certificate cannot be legalized.
